TBL, PPP, CLIL, PBL Methods

Introduction

As a university student preparing to become a teacher, it is important to understand different teaching methods that help students learn in active and meaningful ways. Methods such as Task-Based Learning (TBL), Presentation, Practice, and Production (PPP), Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), and Project-Based Learning (PBL) are used in modern education because they focus on communication, participation, and real-life learning. Each method has a different purpose and teaching style, but all of them aim to make students more involved in the learning process. By studying these approaches, we, as future teachers, can develop strategies that improve student motivation, critical thinking, collaboration, and language development. During these topics, the class was divided into groups to present each topic to the class and this is a summary of what I learned.

Task-Based Learning (TBL)

Task-Based Learning (TBL) is a teaching method where students learn through completing meaningful tasks. Instead of focusing first on grammar rules students use the language to solve problems, discuss ideas, or complete activities related to real life. The teacher acts as a guide while students actively communicate and work together. For example, students may plan a trip, debate a topic, or create a presentation using the target language. Through these tasks, learners naturally practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. TBL encourages communication, confidence, and student participation because learners focus more on meaning than on memorizing grammar. TBL can help create a classroom environment where students feel more engaged and less afraid of making mistakes while speaking.

Presentation, Practice, and Production (PPP)

Presentation, Practice, and Production (PPP) is one of the most traditional and structured teaching methods, especially in language teaching. This method has three stages: Presentation where the teacher introduces new language, grammar, or vocabulary. Practice where students complete controlled activities to practice the new content and Production in which students use the language more freely in conversations or activities. PPP is useful because it gives students clear guidance and helps them build confidence step by step. It is mostly effective for beginner learners who need structure and support before using the language independently. For teachers, PPP can provide organization and classroom control. However, it is important to combine it with more communicative activities so students can also develop creativity and real communication skills.

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is a method where students learn a subject, such as science or history, through a second language. In this approach, students develop both content knowledge and language skills at the same time. CLIL promotes critical thinking, communication, and cultural awareness. It also helps students see language as a tool for learning rather than only as a school subject. CLIL can help prepare students for authentic communication and academic learning in multilingual environments.

Project-Based Learning (PBL)

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered method where learners work on projects over a longer period of time to solve problems or answer important questions. Students usually work in groups, research information and create a final product such as a presentation, poster, video or report. This method encourages teamwork, creativity, independence, and critical thinking. Instead of memorizing information, students apply knowledge to real situations and develop practical skills. For example, students may create a campaign about environmental protection or design a community project using English as the main language of communication. Through the process, students improve language abilities and learn how to collaborate effectively. This method can make learning more motivating and meaningful for students.

Reflection

As a student studying to become a teacher, learning about TBL, PPP, CLIL and PBL has helped me understand that there is not only one correct way to teach. Every method offers different benefits depending on the students’ needs, learning styles, and classroom context. TBL and PBL encourage communication, collaboration and active participation, while PPP provides structure and support for language learning. CLIL, on the other hand, connects language with real academic content and prepares students for real-world communication. These methods show that modern teaching should focus not only on memorization, but also on helping students think critically, communicate confidently, and participate actively in their own learning. As a future teacher, I believe it is important to be flexible and combine different approaches to create engaging and meaningful lessons. Understanding these methods also motivates me to become a teacher who supports creativity, interaction and student growth inside and outside the classroom.

Educational Blog Collection

1. Communicative Competence: More Than Just Grammar

Communicative competence refers to the ability to use language effectively and appropriately in real-life situations. It includes grammar knowledge, communication strategies, fluency, and understanding how to interact in different social contexts. Many students study English grammar for years but still struggle to speak confidently because they lack meaningful communication practice. Activities such as debates, discussions, and role plays help learners develop confidence and improve their ability to communicate naturally in English.

2. Task-Based Learning (TBL): Learning Through Real Communication

Task-Based Learning is a teaching approach where students learn language by completing meaningful tasks such as presentations, interviews, problem-solving activities, or debates. Instead of focusing only on grammar, students use English to achieve a real objective, which encourages authentic communication and collaboration. TBL helps learners improve fluency, critical thinking, and confidence because students actively participate in realistic situations that resemble real-life communication.

3. PPP Methodology: Presentation, Practice, and Production

PPP is a common teaching method that stands for Presentation, Practice, and Production. In the presentation stage, the teacher introduces new language or grammar; during practice, students complete controlled activities; and in production, learners use the language more freely through communication tasks. This method provides structure and guidance for students while gradually helping them become more independent and confident using English in real situations.

4. Collaborative Learning: Building Knowledge Together

Collaborative learning is an educational approach where students work together in pairs or groups to complete activities and solve problems. Through teamwork, learners exchange ideas, improve communication skills, and develop critical thinking abilities. Collaborative activities also increase participation and motivation because students often feel more comfortable sharing ideas in smaller groups. This approach creates a more interactive and supportive learning environment.

5. Student Life and Substance Abuse: Challenges in Modern Education

Student life can involve stress, academic pressure, and social challenges that sometimes contribute to substance abuse among young people. Some students may use alcohol or drugs due to peer pressure, emotional problems, or the desire to reduce stress. However, substance abuse can negatively affect mental health, academic performance, and personal relationships. Schools and universities should promote awareness programs, emotional support, and healthy coping strategies to help students make positive decisions.

6. University Students’ Mental Health: A Growing Concern

Mental health is an important issue among university students because many experience stress related to academic responsibilities, financial problems, social pressure, and uncertainty about the future. Anxiety, depression, burnout, and loneliness can negatively affect students’ academic performance and emotional well-being. Universities can support students by offering counseling services, wellness programs, and safe learning environments where students feel understood and supported. Promoting healthy habits, open communication, and emotional support is essential for helping students succeed both academically and personally.

7. Adapting Textbook Topics into Authentic Materials and Exercises

Although textbooks provide organized content for language learning, many activities do not reflect real-life communication. Teachers can improve engagement by adapting textbook topics into authentic materials such as videos, songs, news articles, interviews, or social media content. These resources expose students to natural language and help connect classroom learning with real-world situations. Authentic activities also increase motivation, participation, and communication skills because students interact with meaningful and relevant content.

8. Action Research: Using Public Speaking to Improve English Speaking Skills in a High School Setting

Many high school students struggle with speaking English because classes often focus more on grammar and writing than oral communication. Action research can help teachers investigate how public speaking activities such as debates, presentations, and speeches improve students’ speaking skills and confidence. Through these activities, learners practice pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and critical thinking while participating in authentic communication. The results may show greater participation, confidence, and improvement in oral English performance.

Conclusion

Education today should focus not only on academic knowledge but also on communication, collaboration, emotional well-being, and meaningful learning experiences. Approaches such as communicative competence, Task-Based Learning, PPP methodology, collaborative learning, authentic materials, and public speaking activities help students develop confidence, fluency, and critical thinking skills. At the same time, understanding issues like substance abuse and mental health is essential for supporting students both academically and personally. By creating interactive, supportive, and real-world learning environments, teachers and educational institutions can better prepare students for future academic, social, and professional challenges.

Presentation, Practice, Production Class

During this investigation, my partner did a class with some students using the PPP method. At the beginning of the class, my partner taught them vocabulary with body movement and having them repeat after. As the class progresses, the instructor adds more information for student to learn. In an other activity, the student begins to have more practice with the information that he or she has acquire. At the end of the class the students make teams and cooperate using information given. However, the teacher steps aside and let's students work. In this part of the class, the students receive little help from the teacher. This will make students help each other and try their best to work as a team.

Task Base Learning Class

There are many ways a teacher can give students a class. It’s not something that everyone can do. It takes more than knowledge to teach. You need to be patient, you need to be flexible and you need to have a passion to teach. My name is Carlos and I did an investigation. In my investigation I had to give an English class using “Task Base Learning”. My objective was simple: Teaching my students how to ask for things found in a market or store. In the following videos you will see how difficult for a beginner can be to teach English to children (in this case).

During the class, it can be noted that the children have different ages. However, they all seemed to be participating in class. Also, some students learn faster than others. In this investigation, the two older girls learned faster than the other three girls. As the class progresses, the children in the end get an idea of what “This is a/an” and “I want…Please/Thank you” mean. In other words, the objective of the class was achieve, but it will need to be reinforce in another class so the students won’t forget what they learned.

THE SILENT WAY

Learning new things in life has always been a challenge. People have always tried to find the perfect approach to teach learners correctly, specially a new language. However, there's no such thing as a perfect approach because learners learn in different ways. Each person has their own way. One rare method that was discovered by Caleb Gattegno was called "The Silent Way" method. The next videos will explain a little bit about this method.

The silent way is useful to develop a certain degree of self-awareness when students can discover the language on their own way by testing things and making use of the materials provided by the teacher. The interaction as well between the teacher and the students as between the students themselves and additionally the participation of the students in class is vital to elicit and practice the language.

Communicative Language Teaching

I learn by observating and analyzing the topic. It depends on what I'm trying to learn. For example, when I began learning English, at first, I listened to the pronunciation while staring at the persons lips and mouth movements. Then I tried to do the same movements with my mouth and finally I made a connection of what it means and how it can be use. When I learn methods or rules in a language, I read and imagine the content. I then try to make an example and a conclusion. What I can do is to learn the ways that my brain can easily collect data or knowledge.

Teachers think that, well not all, but some, they think we can all learn the same way and that we completely understand what they're saying or teaching. Most of the teachers just give a packet to students, using it as a "guide", however, I don't that's a great way to teach. Sometimes they use movies or power point presentations which isn't bad; what's bad is that teachers read the slides. During class I usually try to focus, understand my teacher and making a conclusion with my thoughts. To me, it's either good information or not. I ether agree with my teacher or don't, I only take what I believe it's right.
